From social media, chatbots and traffic apps, to online banking, voice activated technology and dating apps, we use AI every day without even thinking about it.
In fact, there aren’t many parts of our lives that have not embraced AI in some way or another. For many, AI has become a 24/7 therapist, doctor, teacher and more.
Despite AI becoming increasingly sophisticated, these roles traditionally require human connection, empathy and real conversation, and in many cases, this cannot be mimicked by a machine.
Especially when it comes to matchmaking.
AI in dating is largely understood through dating apps, though increasingly chatbots and AI assistants are being relied on for dating advice.
However, tools like ChatGPT might be able to tell you about some great bars for your first date or some cheesy chat up lines, but they still cannot directly introduce you to a meaningful match and potentially great partner.
How can AI in dating help you find love?
There’s no denying that using AI in dating can make some parts of your journey more efficient, depending on which avenues you choose to take, that is. For example, AI can:
- Provide generic dating advice, such as places to go for first dates or how to feel confident
- Analyse data through an algorithm (usually a dating app) to suggest matches based on location, interests and lifestyle
- Write your dating biography
- Edit your profile pictures
- Create icebreakers or talking points for you to use so you can respond to messages
But if you’re hoping to meet someone that matches your values, supports your goals, embraces your success and complements your busy lifestyle, you’re going to need more than these tools.
Here’s what AI cannot do for your dating journey
1. AI cannot understand who you are and what you want
AI tools can scour the internet in just a few seconds to bring you a mountain of suggestions and generic dating advice. It could suggest:
● First date outfit ideas
● Red flags to be aware of
● How to feel confident when dating
● Conversation starters
● How to stay safe on a date
But the truth is, these tools don’t know you. They can’t tailor this advice effectively to your personal circumstance, recognise patterns from your past relationships, profile your personality or give you real emotional support before and after your dates.
Any advice or dating support given will be generic and based on information it has been fed or found online. It does not come from a place of human experience.
2. Look beyond the data
Many of these tools, particularly dating apps, are designed to analyse data to find you matches. The algorithm will take into account basic information such as:
- Age
- Location
- Occupation
- Interests
- Education
- Stated preferences
- Previous matches
But true relationship compatibility involves aspects of your life that are much harder, even impossible, to quantify. For example, your emotional availability, communication style, personality type, values, conflict resolution, relationship history and whether your visions for the future actually work together.
Two people can look exceptionally compatible on paper and have absolutely no chemistry in real life. Just as someone who doesn’t always tick every box on paper can turn out to be your perfect partner.
3. Challenge you and your preconceptions
You are likely to go into your dating journey with a checklist of preferences that you believe you want or need from a partner. Now, this is not to say you don’t know yourself, but AI will simply take this list and run with it.
Whereas, if you choose to work with an expert matchmaker or if you meet someone through a shared connection, you might find that these preconceptions are challenged by others who help you to broaden your horizons.
Some matchmakers will even challenge these preferences on purpose, looking at past relationships and potentially damaging patterns, to find someone you might not have previously considered.
4. Understand or experience chemistry
AI has been “taught” what chemistry is, so though it can potentially help predict patterns associated with compatibility, it cannot understand and experience chemistry itself.
Yes, these tools may technically be able to analyse attributes associated with compatibility, analyse behaviour and analyse preferences; chemistry can only really happen between two people.
It can’t observe the little things that happen when two people meet in person. The smiles, the laughs, the gentle touches and everything else that helps make those sparks fly.
5. Actually introduce you to a real person
Finally, and this is a big one. Using AI in dating cannot directly introduce you to another person.
Yes, an algorithm can say: “These two people have a high compatibility score.”
But a matchmaker can say: “Having spoken to both of them, I understand what they’re looking for, and I know they are both well matched in terms of their personalities, lifestyle, expectations and what they want from a relationship. Would this make them a good match, and can I see long-term compatibility here?”
That’s a fundamentally different process and one which requires the human connection, the ability to look beyond data and numbers, and get to know people on a human level.
Matchmakers’ jobs are to screen singles, understand relationship intentions, consider lifestyle compatibility and look beyond surface-level characteristics to present you with a physical person that they believe is a good match for you. This is something AI simply cannot do.
Choose to work with an expert matchmaker instead
We understand that AI is here to stay, and there’s no denying that these tools can help with certain aspects of dating, largely if you choose to date online or through dating apps.
But love isn’t something that comes from analysing data. It’s not something that can simply be optimised.
Finding the right person requires human understanding, judgement, context and, ultimately, two real people meeting and connecting in the real world.
So, if you’re fed up with AI in dating. If you’re tired of unreliable algorithms and asking ChatGPT why you can’t find a partner, perhaps it’s time to try something new.
